For starters I’ll just say that yes, I am a hard right Libertarian. And you may be able to guess that if you read further. I believe in personal freedom, teeny-weeny government, no debt and real money.
But this blog today is brought to you in the spirit of true freedom. This could be as long or as short as I can handle but the topic of secession can be vast so I am just going to bring about a single point.
What is it with people’s obsession over flags? Conservatives and Liberals alike. Someone steps on, spits on, burns a union flag and we think they should be put to death. An athlete protests and he’s “disrespecting the flag” even though the fucking government PAYS the NFL to act more patriotic. Doesn’t anyone find that to be kinda creepy? I do not like it one bit.
But you know what the union flag really represents is, a forced union which is about as Anti-American as Obamacare and its mandate. Think about it. The short story is, Lincoln was ready to keep the union together even if it came to war! And it did. How is that constitutional? The right to secede is a right that every state has and it is in keeping with the spirit of freedom in which this great republic was conceived.
I hate to break it to you but the war wasn’t fought over slavery. So get over it.
And the confederate flag! Oh, Jesus. Talk about controversy. If anything it is the most patriotic flag of the two. It represents freedom and states rights, of which we have veered far from in our government-dependent, modern society.
I won’t go into the topic of slavery in this blog but it is painfully obvious that one of the states rights the south was fighting for was the right to enslave another person. Now, that is not in keeping with the constitution of our great republic. So it needs no further discussion. I just don’t think it is appropriate to layer one era over another and make a quick judgement without being properly educated.
Bottom line though. Fuck flags. Fuck the national anthem. It isn’t a piece of cloth or a poem/song that guarantees our freedoms. There are natural rights and there are civil rights. Know the difference.
Quit bitching about citizens expressing themselves. Quit treating a president like he’s a savior or the devil. Quit making outlandish apples to oranges comparisons of policy and economics when you don’t really know shit about it.
Before you open your mouth or form a political opinion next time ask yourself, does it align with the concept that we are all created equal? Does it embody the notion that we all have the right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness?
If it doesn’t then try keeping it to yourself. We’ll use a lot less oxygen that way.
Sincerely,
Jeremy B Maher
